Special Police Division for Southern Expressway

The Police Department is ready to take the responsibility to ensure proper road traffic management in Colombo – Galle Expressway, said DIG Ashoka Wijetilaka addressing the media at the Information Department yesterday.

“For the first time in its 145-year old history the Sri Lanka Police has taken the responsibility of fire and rescue and paramedics management on the expressway.” said the DIG. He also said that a Special Police Division with 500 police officers was established for the purpose of overseeing and enforcing traffic safety compliance on this expressway.

Police officers of the special task force has already trained on this purpose. Ambulances, fire rescue vehicles and tug vehicles are available at the Gelanigama, Kahathuduwa and Kurundugahahethekma entrances, the DIG said.

Drivers should always use the left road track and the right road track should be used only to overtake a vehicle.

The public has a very big responsibility to ensure their own safety.
