PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

 

 

Water of wholeness and blessings : A newly constructed well adjoining Thisawewa for bathing and religious observances of the Jayasri Maha Bodhiya was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday. The first pot of blessed water was sprinkled by the President on the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya to invoke blessings. Water of Thisawewa has been used for religious purposes from ancient times. This new water supply scheme was implemented at the premises of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi for traditional religious observances. This well was constructed in remembrance of late D.A. Rajapaksa and Mrs. Rajapaksa. Chief Incumbent of Atamastana Venerable Pallegama Siriniwasa Thera and Chief Incumbent of Ruwanmeli Maha Seya Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thera, Ministers S.M. Chandrasena, Tissa Karalliyadda, Mervin Silva, North Central Province Governor Karunaratne Divulgane and North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake were present. Big rush for Korean jobs

A tense situation prevailed outside Police Park on Highlevel Road yesterday morning, where over 10,000 youths had gathered to obtain application forms to apply for jobs in South Korea. Commotion broke out when authorities failed to provide a sufficient number of application forms which resulted in a heavy traffic jam in the area.

Dengue epidemic warning

Death toll reaches 112 :

With dengue claiming over 112 lives up to August 5, a Medical Research Institute entomological survey revealed that dengue can reach epidemic levels with the current light rains. The highest number of dengue deaths – 52 had been reported from the Colombo district.

Former Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe no more

The Ministry of External Affairs announces with profound sadness and sorrow, the passing away of its former Foreign Secretary, Chrysantha Romesh Jayasinghe on August 8. Mr. Jayasinghe, a senior Foreign Service officer, was appointed Foreign Secretary by the President on October 1, 2009; a position in which he continued until his appointment as an Advisor to the President on March 28 this year.

Rahul Gandhi favourite to be next Indian PM - poll

Rahul Gandhi, scion of India’s Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, is the favourite choice to be the country’s next prime minister, an opinion poll showed Monday. Among his ruling Congress party colleagues, Gandhi is preferred by 42 percent of Indians to lead the country, according to the poll. “No other Congress leader poses any challenge to him,” said leading pollster Yogendra Yadav of the New Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies which conducted the “State of the Nation” poll last month.
