Damaged road causes severe hardship to Udakanda residents in
Balangoda Town area

Residents of the Karawketiya, Udakanda areas are facing hardship due
to the dilapidated state of road running from Karawketiya, Udakanda to
Balangoda town. The road is badly damaged due to neglect of maintenance
for years. No renovation has taken place for many years. As such, all
drivers are compelled to go through a bumpy uncomfortable journey.
This road which runs towards Balangoda Town is dotted with pot holes
and resembles a cart track or foot path. Residents pointed out that ruts
and potholes on the road have become death traps. A number of vehicles,
including light vehicles, lorries transporting tea leaves and vans
transporting school children use this road daily. Many three wheel
drivers on this road have suspended their services to avoid damage to
vehicles.
Residents travel on this road on a daily basis to purchase goods and
for business purposes.
People face a lot of difficulties during emergency situations,
especially when having to take patients to the hospital due to due to
the poor condition of this road.
Around 200 families affected by the dilapidated state of the road
have been requesting the Balangoda Urban Council for years to bring
relief to them. But, all requests have fallen on deaf years.
They request that urgent measures be taken to remedy the problem.
