May Day symbolizes a special landmark
This year’s May Day symbolizes a special landmark in Sri Lanka’s
history. That is because Sri Lanka is now in a position to reap the
harvest of the investments in giant development drives launched at the
end of the 30 year war, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne issuing a May Day
message said.
The message: I have been privileged to add my blessings on the World
Workers Day celebrated by the working community around the world with a
deep sense of comradeship. The social unit “Worker” was created with the
development of capitalism just after collapsing of feudalism in the
Europe. The exploitation of workers at the discretion of the capitalists
paved the way for the struggle against this injustice in 127 years ago
in Chicago marking the first step towards the victory of the working
masses.
In an economically divided society, the class distinction is created
as a result of the pressure prevailing among those classes. In parallel
to the World Workers’ Day, hundreds and thousands of workers in red
colour marched to Victoria Park from Galle Face greens to draw the
attention of the authorities to their demands.
Not only the environment was created for the people in the country to
live free from fear and suspicion, we have just started to gain benefits
of the mass development projects on ports, power houses, highways,
airports, bridges and reservoirs etc. In such a time, the President
always represents the working community as a labour leader. It is
worthless to mention that the policy of the present government is to
uplift the working community as well as the entire population
irrespective of the differences of races, religions, colours, and
parties.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is a leader who emerged from the working
masses and who fought for their rights. This leader always stands for
the workers and therefore, our government was able to boost our economy
under his able leadership. It is unfair to deploy workers on different
missions based on political objectives.
The working community as well as the entire population of the country
has been assigned the responsibility of taking the country towards the
development by defeating the challenges encountered on its way.
In our journey towards the miracle of Asia, I insist on the support
of the working community in achieving those goals and I fervently wish
successful celebrations on the international Workers’ Day.
