Let us hold hands to safeguard worker rights
It is with great honour that we extend the gratitude of the nation to
the working people of our country who have given us the opportunity to
celebrate International Workers’ Day with respect and dignity, President
Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a May Day message said.
The message: On this May Day, I join in solidarity with the workers
of Sri Lanka who come together with all working people of the world to
achieve their rights. Sri Lanka is now a middle income country, an
achievement made possible due to guiding of the national economy in the
proper direction. The driving force behind this has been the working
people of our country, who have looked correctly towards the future of
our land.
They have always acted with responsibility to protect the stability
of the State and our country. This cooperation has safeguarded the
traditions of the International Labour Organization, assisted in
building the country and contributed to the dignity of the working
people of the world.
“There is equal development in the village and city today, with
proper attention of the government towards both field and factory. Laws
and regulations are now in place for the security of service in both the
State and private sectors.
“Therefore, what we have built today is a society that safeguards the
rights of our working people, who are entitled to most of the rights
enjoyed by the workers in the developed world. The livelihood levels of
our working people have risen through advanced technology as well as
good transport, education and health facilities.
“Let us hold hands in unity on this International Workers’ Day with
commitment and determination to safeguard these rights and progressive
steps taken. “I send my greetings and solidarity to the working people
and the trade union movement contributing to build our land.
