Carlton Pre-school New
Year Festival 2013 was held under the patronage of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Sports Ministry Grounds yesterday.

Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa opened the fully equipped Bhikku Ward at the
Panadura Base Hospital on April 5. Sri Lanka Freedom Party
Kalutara District Chief Organizer and Transport Minister
Kumara Welgama spent Rs 10 million to construct the ward.

A ceremony to distribute dry rations
among the members of the families of Police personnel who
sacrificed their lives during the war was held at the Police
Welfare Centre Colombo. Here, Sunetha Ranasinghe, the wife

August 20, 1998 in Murukkan, Vavuniya, is given a parcel of

A ceremony to handover
appointment letters for new vacant posts was held at the
Governor's sub office in Colombo. Northern Province Governor
G A Chandrasiri handed over the appointment letters. Thirty
six technical officers,
five draughtmen and seven colonisation officers received
appointment letters. Chief Secretary of Northern Province
R.Wijialudchumi, Secretary to the Governor L.Ilaangovan and
Agriculture Ministry Secretary U.L.M. Haldeen were also

A 19 member delegation
from the National Defence University in Pakistan led by
Commodore Asif Saleem Chaudhry visited the Sri Lanka Naval
Headquarters. The head of the delegation paid a courtesy
call on Navy Commander Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage. They
also exchanged mementos. NDU officers attended an
interactive session presided over by the Navy Commander
where he briefed about the Sri Lanka Navy role and its
operations drawing attention to the Sri Lanka Navy's
successes in asymmetric warfare. The Pakistan National
Defence University team, comprising senior officers of the
Armed Forces and Civil Services of Pakistan and military
officers from China, United Arab Emirates and United States
of America, is on a study tour in Sri Lanka to gain an
overview of defence, economic, domestic and foreign policies
of Sri Lanka |

Tamil language scholar
Madulugiriya Wijerathne was honoured with the Buddha's Light
Award for his contribution to propagate Buddhism. The award
is presented by the Chennai Chapter of the Buddha's Light
Internet Association affiliated to the United Nations
Organisation Economic and Social Council. The presentation
was held at the International Buddhist Conference in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu recently. Here, Wijerathne receiving the
award from Tamil Nadu State Assembly member Y S Tamilarasar.
Professor Kaliyaperumal of the Tamil Nadu State
Parliamentarian Tamilarasar, Dfharmavijaya Viharaya, Madurai
Chief Incumbent Ven Dr Madurai Bodhipala Thera and Dr K
Jayabalan of the Indian State Art College were also present.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan has been honoured by the
Buddha's Light Association. |

The Chettikulam Police
Station won two awards for efficiency and productivity among
large scale private and public sector institutions at the
2012 JASTECA awards ceremony organised by the Japan Sri
Lanka Technical Cooperation Agency in Colombo recently.
