More than two million join SLFP in a week

The people’s endorsement of the government’s efforts to resisit local and foreign pressures aimed at reversing the country’s triumph over terrorism, and retarding progress, is clearly seen by more than two million people obtaining membership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, within a single week, SLFP Secretary General and Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said.

He made this observation yesterday at a special press conference of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at the Mahaveli Centre auditorium on the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s membership drive under the theme “Rata Nagana Nil Rella”.

He said there were challenges both at local and international level faced by the country. He added that this stampede to join the SLFP is a blessing on the government to face all these challenges. The Minister stated that no political party has been able to recruit such a massive amount of members within a week in the history of Sri Lankan politics. He said the same programe will be held in the North soon

Minister Sirisena also said not only the Sri Lankan government but governments in many countries are facing challenges and that this Sri Lankan government has power to overcome all the obstacles with the people’s blessing.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Treasurer and Youth Affairs and Skill Development Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said the very fact that elections are being held in the Northern Province after 30 years of terrorism is a historical victory the SLFP, to a question raised on the SLFP’s political strength in the North.

The Rata Nagana Nil Rella was planned to be held from March 28 to April 2 but the programme is in progress as there were more to obtain party membership.
