Police warn of fraudsters
YASARATNE GAMAGE
The Police Public Relations ( PPR ) Unit warned the public to be
vigilant about fraudsters who deceive people over telephone and via SMS
asking people to deposit money to receive a prize of a raffle draw they
have won.
The PPR Unit also reported that certain phone companies and other
private firms reward people with attractive cash prizes after a raffle
draw as part of their business promotions and certain individuals take
advantage of these instances and deceive people by contacting them via
phone or SMS and request them to deposit money by giving them account
numbers to receive their prizes.
These people who pose as organisers of raffle draws, get people to
deposit money in their bank accounts as a payment of transport or
registration fee prior to the delivery of the prizes.
The Police request the public to contact the nearest police station
if they suspect they are going to be cheated.
