Rs. 500,000 worth fruits unfit for consumption seized

Kandy Consumer Affairs Authority officials yesterday arrested a top level businessman and six other businessmen for selling oranges and apples valued at Rs.500,000 unfit for human consumption in and around Kandy district.

The imported fruits were in an unfit condition for consumption when the stock was released to the market.

Acting on a tip off, Kandy CAA officials with the help of Police raided some key fruit selling stalls in the district and found that many fruits were unfit for consumption. The spoilt fruits were found hidden in a warehouse at Dangolla and at a cold storage in the Kandy central market. In addition, other six businessmen were arrested when they were selling fruits in front of the main central bus stand. CAA Kandy branch on the directives of its Chief Nishantha Madaragoda are investigating.
