Rs. 500,000 worth fruits unfit for consumption seized

Kandy Consumer Affairs Authority officials yesterday arrested a top
level businessman and six other businessmen for selling oranges and
apples valued at Rs.500,000 unfit for human consumption in and around
Kandy district.
The imported fruits were in an unfit condition for consumption when
the stock was released to the market.
Acting on a tip off, Kandy CAA officials with the help of Police
raided some key fruit selling stalls in the district and found that many
fruits were unfit for consumption. The spoilt fruits were found hidden
in a warehouse at Dangolla and at a cold storage in the Kandy central
market. In addition, other six businessmen were arrested when they were
selling fruits in front of the main central bus stand. CAA Kandy branch
on the directives of its Chief Nishantha Madaragoda are investigating.
