The ceremonial unveiling of the statue of Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara, revered as the Father of Free Education was held at C. W. W. Kannangara Vidyalaya, Mahamodara, Galle under the auspices of Opposition and UNP leader Rani Wickremesinghe on Monday.

It was held marking the 65th Independence Day. The construction of the statue was sponsored by the Vajira Abeywardana Foundation.

The occasion felicitated this great patriot who was among those who led the national movement in the first half of the 20th century and prepared ground for the independence of the country.

A number of politicians from many parties gathered in unity to pay tribute to this great son of the soil.
