The Kingston College International (KCI) celebrated its Founder’s Day
recently at Mutwal and all other branches namely Wellawatte, Mount
Lavinia and Matale in an elaborate manner. In fact, principals of
various sections, students, teachers, office staff and minor employees
numbering more than 500 attended this function at the Mutwal branch.
This function commenced with the hoisting of the school flag by the
Founder of this prestigious college and chairman of the four branches
Lion Dr J Kumaraverl and the principal E N Soundaram. Dr Kumaraverl was
taken in the procession by the students accompaning the college band to
the main hall where the function started with the lighting of the
traditional oil lamp by the Chairman Dr Kumaraverl, Principal of the
college E N Soundaram, Principal of the primary section, P Thambirarajah,
Principal of the nursery section, Poorani Sivapragasam and aslo by the
prefects of the college.
Thereafter, several speeches were made by the students expressing
their sincere gratitude to the chairman for the tremendous service he is
rendering for the betterment of the college in respect of education,
discipline, economy and society which indeed is the motto of the KCI.
Though this college was established in 1990 by Dr Kamaraverl, who is
a great educationist and philanthropist, it has known majestically now
and is preparing for London Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level
(A/L) examinations and even to gain admission to Oxford and Cambridge
universities.
Further, the medium of instruction is English and French is the
second language. Tamil and Sinhala are the third languages. Several
teachers with vast knowledge in their respective subjects and wide
experience are teaching in this college and in regard to the examination
results, every year students perform extremely well. Even the teachers
are highly disciplined and principal of the college, E N Soundaram pilot
the affairs of the college to the greatest satisfaction of the parents.
P Thambirajah and Poorani Sivapragasam who are in-charge of the
primary and nursery sections are very particular that the students
should maintain high sense of discipline and do well in their studies.
Pakiarajah, who is the Founder Principal of Kingston College,
International was principal of Winston Girls’ College, Batticaloa for
several years and Deputy Director of Education. In fact, she is
responsible for bringing up the college to this stature since she
herself is a woman of high discipline with vast knowledge in various
subjects.
Dr Kumaraverl, who is the Founder of this college is an educationist
of high calibre with national and international reputation. He is a
multi-faceted personality with several qualifications to his credit. He
was at one time an assistant lecturer and then visiting lecturer at the
Engineering Faculty of the University of Ceylon.
He is a B.Sc engineering graduate and a Chartered Engineer. He holds
a Master’s Degree in Business Management and in addition he has a Law
Degree from the University of Ceylon. He sat for the Law College
examination to be an advocate and with the changing over the system to
Attorney-at-Law, he was placed first in the island that year. Besides,
he is an honorary doctorate, Melvin Jones Fellow, Past Lions Deputy
District Governor, Past Lions Cabinet Treasurer with more than 34 years
of dedicated service as a Lion.
Dr Kumaraverl received his primary and secondary education at S
Thomas College, Mt Lavinia and passed the Senior School Certificate (SSC)
in the first division, winning the most coveted Miller Mathematical
Memorial Prize in the Advanced Level.
Further, the admission to this college is competitive and on a first
come first served basis. This college maintains high degree of
discipline and punctuality. The college has a fully equipped computer
centre at all the branches. Besides, there is a well stocked books,
magazines, periodically and newspapers in the library and also adequate
laboratory facilities to meet the requirements of the London O/L and A/L
students.
Indeed, Dr Kumaraverl has taken all possible steps to provide a
quality education to these students and has given a global dimension to
this college.
