The United Nations declared October 11 to be the first ever
International Day Of The Girl and the heads of Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Vidyalaya thought it an opportune time to celebrate this day being one
of the leading national schools in Sri Lanka. Incidentally Prime
Minister Sirimavo R D Bandaranaike who the school was named after passed
away on October 10.
The chief guest who graced the occasion was First Lady Shiranthi
Rajapaksa.
On October 11, one could see all the pomp and excitement in the
grounds of Sirimavo, with girls trying to outdo each other and showing
off as much as possible, glad to be part of the event. At the event
Principal Dhammika C A Jayanetti praised former Priminister Sirimavo
Bandaranaike calling her a role model for all young girls throughout in
Sri Lanka. At the occasion anyone could speak about was the greatness of
Sirimavo Bandaranaike as a leader of women and her impact on the lives
of all young girls.
"Girls are a gift to the people of Sri Lanka. Regardless of religion,
caste or economic back ground they must be protected and treated with
dignity," said Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena.
