All preliminary arrangements have now been finalised to set up a new
Hydro Power station which will increase the power supply of the national
grid as part of the development expansion projects in the country.
In this connection, the first Hydro Power station in the South will
be set up soon at Katuwana in the Hambantota District, confirmed
Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
The new power station which will come up in the Keselwatta area in
Katuwana in Hambantota, will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 250
million.
On completion of installation work and with the commissioning of the
project, the Hydro Power station is expected to add 6.5 mega watts to
the national grid, thereby contributing to the infrastructure
development process in the country.
It has been estimated that over 200 indirect employment avenues and
six direct employment avenues will be generated with the work being
completed on the new power generation project. According to the Katuwana
Pradeshiya Sabha, the project will come up as a special proposal made by
Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
It had earlier been pointed out that such electricity power
generation was a necessity to cater to the large scale development
projects in the district. |
