Australia wants closer ASEAN ties - FM
Australia will elevate its engagement with the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations and seek to more closely
align its foreign policy with that of the bloc, Foreign Minister Bob
Carr said Friday. In an interview with the Australian Financial
Review, Carr said Australia, which last weekend released a
comprehensive blueprint for enhancing its ties with Asia, recognised
ASEAN's “centrality in the region”.

Obama, Romney duel on campaign’s final stretch
President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney sprinted
back onto the campaign trail Thursday, touting rival visions for
America to the faithful and the undecided just five days from
polling day. After a rare political truce which allowed Obama to
preside over the federal response to this week's superstorm Sandy,
which killed dozens and devastated parts of the Eastern seaboard,
the two candidates stopped pulling their punches and re-engaged for
the final round of their heavyweight presidential bout.

China-US ties face challenges in coming decade
US-China ties will remain “vexing and
challenging” as Beijing's new leaders face internal stresses due to
a slowing economy and increasing distrust from their people, US
diplomats said Thursday. “It will be the most consequential foreign
policy challenge that we will ever face,” US Assistant Secretary of
State Kurt Campbell told a seminar held in Washington, speaking
about future relations between the two powers.
