Man with hooch gets Rs 35,000 fine

A man with 22,500 ml of kasippu and utensils used to prepare the illicit brew was nabbed by Hanwella Police.

The man produced before Avissawella magistrate and additional district judge D H A Seneviratne, was fined Rs 35,000.


Fined for indecent behaviour

Four persons, who behaved indecently in a public place under the influence of liquor, were arrested by the Mahawela Police.

They were fined Rs 2,500 each on being produced before Paldeniya Circuit Court Magistrate Rangani Gamage.


Appeal for assistance

Baby Dulmeth Nethmira of 283/A/2, Dagonna, Negombo has been diagnosed with B Thalassaemia major.

A bone marrow transplant surgery has been recommended by the doctors at the Ragama hospital.

He is now awaiting the surgery under the care of Dr. Biju George of the Base Hospital (Christian Medical College and Hospital) of Vellore in India.

The estimated cost of the bone marrow transplantation is 5m rupees.

The parents of the child are not in a position to meet the cost and appeal for public donations which may be sent to A/c No. 72956238, Bank of Ceylon, Negombo.

Eid-Ul-Fitr Prayers

Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers will be conducted on the Ramalaan festival day at Stanley Jansz Ground (Metty Park) in Perahera Mawatha (opposite the Bank of Ceylon), Colombo 2. Prayers will commence at 6.45 a.m.


National conference

The First National Conference of the Buddhist and Pali University on the theme "Expansion of Buddhism and its Socialization" will be held on August 24 and 25 at the Buddhist and Pali University, Pitipana, Homagama.

The objective of the conference is to commemorate the 2600th Supreme Enlightenment Jubilee of the Gautama Buddha by setting up a forum for the academicians engaged in Buddhist studies as well as other related disciplines to take a cohesive and reciprocal brainstorming into the deepest fathom of supreme and sublime humanity of the Buddha's teaching.

The conference gathers researchers, scholars and professionals to discourse on research and issues relevant to the Theravada Buddhism. 


Woman dies in road mishap

A woman died and three others were injured when a trishaw collided with a van in Anuuhatahamara area on the Embilipitiya, Ratnapura road yesterday morning.

Two of the three injured in a critical condition were receiving treatment at the Embilipitiya Hospital.
