Couple dead

A husband and wife died while another one was injured in an incident in Katuwana on Sunday night.

S Somawathi, 52, died of stab injuries while police found the body of her husband, K Jinadasa ,60, hanging from a tree opposite their house in Gomadiya.

The other person, a 32-year- old man believed to be from the same family was admitted to Embilipitiya Hospital with stab injuries. Katuwana Police are investigating.

Chain snatcher nabbed

Grandpass Police arrested a man who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman in Grandpass on Sunday.

The suspect had snatched the chain while the woman was walking along the road.

Police also found the chain and the motorcycle used by the suspect.

The suspect was produced before the Aluthkade magistrate yesterday.

Two bodies found

Police found two bodies in Piliyandala and Kayts on Sunday. Police said the body of an elderly man was found floating in the Bolgoda Lake.

The victim was identified as D Premasiri, 75, of Moratumulla. The other body was found in a jungle near a kovil in Karainagar.

Police identified the victim as W Mahendran, 36, of Karainagar.

The body was sent to the Jaffna Hospital morgue.

Investigations revealed both were mentally retarded.

Swindlers arrested

Two women and a man who tried to pawn imitation jewellery at a shop in Hatton were arrested on Saturday.

Investigations revealed one of them had been issued 43 open warrants following a money swindling case on the promise of finding jobs abroad.

The suspects, residents of Kadawatha and Delgoda, were remanded until July 24 by the Hatton magistrate.

Hatton Police are investigating.

Indian fishermen in custody

Naval officers of Thammanna Camp on Sunday intercepted five Indian fishing vessels anchored at sea in Pesalai.

The Navy also arrested 23 fishermen along with the vessels.

The boats and the suspects were handed over to Thalaimanna Police.
