No statistical basis to ‘crime wave’
Govt has taken steps to mitigate crime rate :
There is “no crime wave” in the country according
to available statistics. The government has initiated a number of
projects to minimise crimes committed in post- conflict times,
Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa
said.

‘No rapes committed by Security Forces in North and East’
The members of the security forces have not been
involved in the any sexual assault, in North and East, Defence and
Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said. He
said according to the statistics and revelations of a study
conducted at hospital level no evidence was found that the personnel
attached to the security forces were involved in sexual assaults in
North and East provinces.

Police swoop on absconding suspects
Police arrested 17,595 persons who had been on
outstanding warrants, in one month, Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith
Rohana said yesterday. The Police initiated an islandwide operation
from June 20 to July 20 to arrest 21,798 persons against whom
warrants had been issued by courts and succeeded in taking into
custody 17,595 suspects covering 43 police divisions. The largest
number of 1,234 suspects were arrested from Anuradhapura while 894
were arrested in Kandy. Police arrested 884 out of 1,082 persons who
had warrants issued against them in Ratnapura.

Navy intercepts Australia-bound multi-day trawler off Nilaweli
Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) intercepted another
multi-day trawler illegally heading for Australia off Nilaweli on
July 21. The intercepted trawler was escorted to the Trincomalee
Harbour with 53 persons onboard to be handed over to the Criminal
Investigation Department for further investigations.
