Navy intercepts Australia-bound multi-day trawler off Nilaweli

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) intercepted another multi-day trawler illegally heading for Australia off Nilaweli on July 21. The intercepted trawler was escorted to the Trincomalee Harbour with 53 persons onboard to be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.

The arrested persons are in Trincomalee, Negombo, Killinochchi and Jaffna. The trawler named “Minoru Putha 2” with personal belongings and dry rations stacked inside was detected by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command.

The arrest is the seventh made by the Navy within 12 days in Sri Lankan waters.

Navy’s vigilance has been able to avert seven human tragedies in the rough seas and save the lives of 454 persons during this month.
