A three judge Bench of the Supreme Court yesterday directed the
chairman of the University Grants Commission and respondent Prof. Gamini
Samaranayake and the petitioners against the earlier (2011) Z score
system to file affidavits to consider what steps, if any, to be taken
thereafter by the same Bench at the next date of mention fixed for
September 12.
The Bench constituted of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, Justice
K. Sri Pavan and Justice Nimal Gamini Ameratunge.
The respondent was given one month with the petitioners comprising
students and a teachers’ union given 10 days, to file their respective
affidavits. Earlier Attorney at Law Faiz Musthafa,PC appearing for the
respondent informed court that he would be filing an affidavit and moved
the court to grant one months time bar which was allowed.
The respondent on July 19 was issued with notice to show cause why
contempt of court proceedings should not be instituted against him for
not taking steps to comply with the June 25 court order to recalculate
the Z score of the 2011 GCE (AL) in accordance with the UGC Act.
Attorney at Law Faiz Mustafa PC produced a photocopy of the media
briefing earlier held with the participation of the respondent in
connection with the Z score issue. |
