President Rajapaksa meets Cuban Vice President :
Action plan on multi-sectoral cooperation
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on a three day official visit to Cuba,
met Cuban Vice President Marino Murillo at the Palace of the Revolution
in Havana on Monday.
During the meeting, the manner in which the action plan on expanding
cooperation between the two countries in the fields of health, sports,
educational scholarships and economic development agreed upon by
President Rajapaksa and Cuban President Raul Castro could be implemented
was discussed in detail, a press release issued by the President’s Media
Division said yesterday.
Discussions also centred on expanding cooperation in providing
trainers for the development of volleyball, football and boxing.
Marino Murillo who is also in charge of economic development and
infrastructure facilities in Cuba, explained the vast strides made by
Cuba in the development sector. The manner in which Sri Lanka could
adopt the successful strategies implemented by Cuba in the development
fields and profit from Cuba’s examples was also discussed at the
meeting. Cuba also agreed to assist Sri Lanka in the development of its
coconut industry. External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris and
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga were also present at the
discussions.
