Lankan salesman run over by customer
A 23-year-old Sri Lankan salesman working at a grocery shop in Bin
Mahmoud, Qatar was killed in an accident on Friday evening when he
chased a customer who tried to flee the place without making payment.
The incident took place around 9.45pm.
The victim, identified as Mohamed Murshed, was run over by the erring
customer’s car when he reportedly tried to cling on to the vehicle’s
side glass. The customer had ordered soft-drinks while still sitting in
his vehicle.
Sources said that the youth was found dead on the road about 200
metres from the grocery.
Murshed died of severe head injuries. The motorist, reportedly
driving a four wheel, sped away.
The shop owner said Murshed had been working for him for about two
years. He said there had been several incidents of customers leaving
without making payments for purchases.
In a similar incident a few months ago in Najma, a salesman was
injured while chasing a motorist who failed to pay after making some
purchases from a local grocery.

Awards for blood donors

Jaffna Teaching Hospital Director Dr Mrs Bawani Pasupathyraja awarded
medals and certificates to donors who had donated blood on more than 40
occasions at a ceremony at the Veerasingham Hall, Jaffna on June 16.
Accordingly, 134 blood donors were honoured at the awards
presentation ceremony. Those who had donated blood on 40 or more
occasions were presented medals while people who had donated blood 20 or
more times were presented certificates.
Jaffna Teaching Hospital gynaecologist Dr K Mukunthan, Jaffna Bank of
Ceylon Extension Branch Manager Konesanathan were the chief guests.

New buildings at Tellipallai
Jaffna special corr
Three buildings are being constructed at Tellipallai junction under
the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme. Work on the bus travellers rest room
has been completed while a two storeyed market complex and a library are
also being built. The foundation stone for these buildings was laid last
year by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
He needs help
A R M Shajahan, 48, of 216, Galloluwa, Minuwangoda, is suffering from
kidney failure. Consultant Nephrologist Dr A L M Nazar of the Colombo
National Hospital, has directed a transplant of both kidneys for his
survival. The cost for the above treatment is around 1.5 million.
The family, unable to raise this amount, solicit donations from the

Charter for agriculture passed after 25 years

The Charter that had been drafted for the agricultural sector of the
North Western Province after 25 years of its inception of was
unanimously passed at the Provincial Council meeting.
The Charter, submitted by Provincial Minister of Agriculture, D B
Herath, was debated at the Provincial Council meeting. Expressing views
at the debate, the Provincial Minister of Agriculture, said this Charter
was submitted as a legal document, essential in solve problems arising
to the agricultural sector.
Opposition Leader of the Provincial Council Shamal Senarath, said the
Charter would provide a legal coverage to the agricultural sector.
Chairman Provincial Council, R D Wimaladasa, presided over the meeting.
Watery grave for child

A two and a half- year- old child drowned in a stream near his house.
This was revealed at the inquest held on the death of M Ashan of
Welisara, Ragama by inquirer into sudden deaths, Ragama, M Priyankara
Lal. The child's mother, H P Shanika Dulanjanie, 18, in evidence said on
the day of the incident, she had gone to sleep after feeding her child.
She said Ashan had gone out of the house and drowned in the stream. Dr
Keerthi Gunathilake held the autopsy. The inquirer recorded a verdict of
accidental death due to drowning. Mahabage Police led evidence.
Businessman dies in crash

A leading businessman died on admission to the Colombo North General
Hospital, Ragama after the motorcycle he was riding was knocked by a CTB
bus. The motorcycle, M T Dominic Perera, 58, a father of four was
riding, was knocked down by a CTB bus at Kanuwana, Jaela. The bus and
driver are in Police custody.
Man dies in train crash

A man died on the spot after he was knocked down by a train. D A
Chaminda Pradeep Kumara, 24, of Mahara was knocked down by the Ambepussa
bound train near the Gampaha Flyover on Tuesday at about 3pm. Gampaha
Police are investigating.
Fire destroys 500 acres in forest reserve

A fire in the Karanatipotha Kanda, Kospotha, Galewela Forest Reserve
destroyed around 500 acres on Saturday afternoon.
The sudden rains brought the fire under control, Kospotha Grama Sewa
Niladhari Indunil Aluthgama said.
Around 200 villagers and police personnel also helped douse the fire,
he said.
“The meditation abodes in the forest reserve were not damaged.
However, the water pipeline system providing water to the abodes was
damaged,” Aluthgama said. |
