New law to benefit traders, farmers - Dinesh

The attention of the government will be drawn to the problems of traders and farmers with the implementation of the law, making it compulsory to use plastic crates for the transport of vegetables and fruits, Chief Government Whip and Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said in Parliament yesterday.

He said that the prevailing matters with regard to the practical implementation of this law will be directed to the attention of the relevant minister and authorities.

He said that the benefit of this law is for the farming community since it minimizes the wastage of vegetables and fruits when transporting them.

The minister made this comment replying to a question raised by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe before the commencement of the third reading of the budget.

The minister observed that if necessary the government will reconsider and postpone the implementation of this law.
