Freedom for over 1,200 detainees

Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said that the lifting of Emergency regulations has helped in the release of over 1,200 former LTTE members detained by the Security Forces under the Emergency.

“One thousand two hundred former LTTE members will be released soon”, he said.

The files of these members are under investigation by the Attorney General and the release will be expedited, he added.

The Attorney General’s Department is investigating 1,000 hardcore LTTE members and a Cabinet paper will be forwarded to grant approval for the release of other members through a special Parliamentary Act, he said.

The lifting of the Emergency has resulted in the immediate release of those detained under Emergency and as there are no Emergency laws in the country, the Attorney General’s office will release all persons detained under these laws, he said.
