Wealthy businessman arrested with contraband cigarettes

The Special Intelligence Operations Unit of the Colombo Fraud
Investigation Bureau has arrested a wealthy businessman who had
allegedly imported a Gold Seal brand cigarette haul worth Rs five
million without paying duty, in a raid in Periyamulla area in Negombo on
Monday night. The haul consisted of 184,200 cigarettes.
The suspect had been involving in distributing cigarettes to
small-scale businessmen by importing them with another few businessmen.
The Bureau said that investigations are on to arrest several more
suspects involved in the racket.
The suspect was to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate Court
yesterday. |
