KOICA resident representative Cho Sang Woo and Education
Ministry Secretary H M Gunasekara signed a Record of
Discussion (ROD), stipulating the terms and conditions of
the project for the construction of classrooms and
facilities in the Kilinochchi district at the Education
Ministry on August 25. The project is aimed to help
rehabilitate severely damaged school classrooms and
facilities affected by the conflict in the Northern Province
and support Sri Lankan efforts to achieve 1,000 secondary
school reconstruction schemes all across the country. Here,

Pindapatha for 100 Bhikkus at Sujatha Vidyalaya
A pindapatha for 100 bhikkus was held on August 3 to bestow blessings
on students sitting the A/L and O/L examinations in August and December
2011. It was organized by the Buddhist Association of Sujatha Vidyalaya,
Nugegoda.
This event was participated by students, teachers, parents,
management staff and well-wishers.
Hundred bhikkus arrived from eight temples in the area on pindapatha
to Sujatha Vidyalaya. Students, teachers, parents and the public lined
up on the way up to the main entrance of the school grounds and offered
dana.
After offering the pindapatha dana, bhikkus were offered pirikara by
students. Viharadhipathi Most Ven Depane Sumanawansa Thera delivering an
anusasana blessed the students sitting the examinations.
Korean language test on Oct 15, 16
The Korean language proficiency test for Sri Lankans seeking
employment in Korea will be held on October 15 and 16, a release issued
by the SLBFE said.
This examination which was earlier scheduled to be held on October 8
and 9 was postponed to October 15-16 as some areas in the country will
hold local government election. The date of the examination for every
candidate and the number of the examination hall, will be made public
through the media in due course.
The candidates can obtain information related to the examination
including the timetable from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment
website www.slbfe.lk from September 22.
Over 50,730 candidates will sit for the examination.

Wheelchairs for needy children

Alexander Dimuth De Silva, a 10-year- old- boy who is studying at
Independent Bonn International School in Bonn, Germany donated five
wheelchairs to differently - abled children in Maharagama when he came
to his motherland during his school vacation.
On a request made by Dimuth’s parents, Maharagama Divisional
Secretary Buddhi Tharanga Karunasena introduced beneficiary children for
the donation.
Dimuth’s mother said that Dimuth started his charity work for
differently - abled children from childhood. He had formed a charity
fund for them and through that Dinuth provides wheelchairs for such
children.
Islamic songs on ITN
Independent Television Network (ITN) will telecast a discussion and
Islamic songs to mark Ramazan Festival today at 3.15 pm.
Media personnel Javid Munawwar and Sri Lanka Islamic Society
President Ruzaik Farook will participate in the discussion. Fahmy Rauf,
Isaiko Dr. N M Noordeen, Noorjan Marzook and Mueena Baigs Islamic songs
will also be featured. The programme producer is Siddeek Haniffa.
Kidney patient needs urgent help
U.H. Choolaratne (44), a resident of Kataragama is suffering from
severe renal failure and Consultant Nephrologist of the National
Hospital Dr. A.L.M. Nazar says that Choolaratne is in the end stages of
kidney failure and recommends a kidney transplant to save his life.
The patient appeals to the general public to donate him a kidney and
funds to meet with medical expenses which is Rs 500,000, according to
the doctors.
A driver by profession, he is unable to afford the sum needed for
medical expenses as he has a wife and two children to support with his
meagre salary. He entreats the public to help him and send their
donations to A/C 5204673 Bank of Ceylon, Kataragama.
Annual get-together
The 11th Annual reunion of classmates of the Junior A, B, C and E
(1961) of St. Aloysius College, Galle will be held on Sunday 4th
September 2011, at Nooit Gedateh, Matara Road, Unawatuna, Galle at 10
am. All classmates are kindly requested to assemble at the College gates
at 9.30 am for the group photograph.

Get-together
The 10th anniversary celebrations of the Gothami Kanishta Vidyalaya,
Gampaha and the annual get-together of the Schools Past Pupils
Association will be held at the Gampaha Botanical Gardens on September 4
from 8.30 am to 5 pm.
A spokesperson for the organizing committee said fun and games
including a cricket match has been lined up for the day for the
entertainment of elders and their children. All past pupils are
requested to participate in this event with their families to make it a
success.
Book launches
The novel Siriyawathie Saha Ege Daruwo authored by award winning
novelist and journalist Bandula R Gulawatta, will be launched at a
ceremony at the Horana Vidyaratna College of Education on Saturday,
September 10 at 2.30 pm.
Dean of the Vidharatna College of Education Ven Omalpe Gnanasiri
Thera will preside.
Veteran author Jayatilleke Kammellaweera and veteran authoress Karuna
Perera will deliver special lectures.
Siriyawathie Saha Ege Daruwo won the first prize in the manuscript
competition held in 2001 by the Bennet Cooray Foundation and the Hansa
Foundation.
The panel judges at this competition comprised Prof Tissa Kariyawasam,
Prof Anura Wickramasinghe, Prof Sarath Wijesuriya and Jayatilleke
Kammallaweera.
The launching ceremony is jointly organized by the Raigampura
Independent Writers Society and the Raigampura Media Friends Society.

Battle in Time, a book by Anjani and Sashi Mariathasan, will be
launched on September 2 at Dukes Court II, Cinnamon Lakside. Proceeds of
the sale of the novel will be donated to the Anjani Mariathasan Memorial
Trust in Sri Lanka, which aims to facilitate the development and
improvement of disadvantaged communities within the country.
The authors are two sisters, Anjani and Sashi Mariathasan. Anjani,
the elder, was born on July 9, 1994, and started writing the story when
she was eight, based around a Rubik Cube that she had been given as a
gift. In August 2003, Anjani died in an accident whilst on holiday in
Sri Lanka. Sashi was born on June 8, 1996. She continued the story as a
tribute to her elder sister. Anjani had explained the plot to her then
seven year old younger sister, shortly before the accident, and it took
eight years to turn the imaginative ideas of Anjani, into a structured
and entertaining story.
Arts Festival
The Arts Festival 2011, of the Arts Faculty of Aquinas University
College, Sanhinda Pamula, will be held on September 3 and 4, 2011 at the
university premises.
The competition of debates will be held live on September 3 and a
concert will be held from 10 am onwards on September 4.
SAARC artists' camp and exhibition
The SAARC Cultural Centre will host the SAARC Artists' Camp and
Exhibition of Paintings which will be held from September 3 to 6 in
Colombo.
Leading artists from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, the Maldives and
Sri Lanka will participate. This is the first time a gathering of
artists from the region, will take place in Sri Lanka, in the form of an
Artists' Camp and Exhibition. Interactive sessions among artists will
also be held at the Janakala Kendraya.
The Artists' Camp will create a forum for artists in the region to
come together and work on a theme as well as exhibit their paintings,
which will portray similarities within the region, yet diverse enough to
give each artist/painting their identity.
An exhibition of paintings will be open to the public from September
3 to 6 at the J D A Perera Art Gallery.
The public can also watch artists at work from September 3 to 6 at
the Janakala Kendraya. The SAARC Cultural Centre will give an
opportunity for students from the Department of Paintings, University of
Visual and Performing Arts to display paintings based on the same theme.
He needs help
M.B. Soysa of No. 5, Nithalawa, Halmillawewa, is suffering from an
acute neuro problem. Consultant Neuro Surgeon Dr. Sunil Perera, has
recommended an urgent Servical Discectomy operation to cure his illness.
The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 750,000.
Soysa says that he is unable to foot this bill due to his present
financial plight. He requests philanthropists and the public to assist
his cause by sending whatever financial contribution possible to help
expedite the surgery.
