Kelani Cables wins ISO for environmental management

Kelani Cables PLC was awarded the ISO 14000;2004/SLS ISO 14001;2004 certification for environment management at a ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Standards Institute Head Office last week.


Award winning team of Kelani Cables PLC - Technical Service Engineer Shyama Perera, Marketing General Manager Anil Munasinghe, CEO Mahinda Saranapala, Deputy Chairman Suren Madanayake, Chairman Upali Madanayake, SLSI Director General Dr. L.N. Senaweera, SLSI System Certifications Director Gamini Dharmawardana, Operations General Manager Upul Mahanama and Brand Development Manager Channa Jayasinghe.

“Winning the ISO 14001 Environment Management certification validates and recognizes our efforts in sustainability of environment.

We launched this initiative in April and happy that we were able to secure the certification within a short space of time,” Kelani Cables PLC Chief Executive Officer Mahinda Saranapala told Daily News Business.

“The company took measures in safeguarding the environment by practising 5 S, Keyzan and other initiatives where a strong foundation was laid upon. We worked as a team to achieve this status, he said.

The company formed an ISO 14001 steering committee headed by Technical Services Engineer Shyama Perera and after a comprehensive evaluation process was able to obtain the certification.

The company deploys total change management driven by quality cost delivery where total floor management, total production maintenance, total quality management and total service management are key components.

“We strive at sustainable growth and profits as our main focus and we were able to record 30 percent top line growth and 520 percent bottom line growth for Q1 as against the previous year.

The certification is a plus point for our export market expansion plan to widen our reach and global presence, Saranapala said.

According to the company environmental policy Kelani Cables PLC and its employees are committed to ensure the company’s operations comply with all applicable environment related legal and other requirements.

Kelani Cables PLC will continuously improve its environmental performance by reducing the impact and prevention of pollution through economically feasible and technologically practicable processes.

“The entire staff will ensure optimum use of raw materials, water and energy, minimize and control waste, create awareness regarding their responsibilities to make a greener environment, communicate our environmental policy to all employees, stakeholders and to the community,” Saranapala said.
