New ambassadors and High Commissioner present credentials

Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the UAE Sarath Wijesinghe invited UAE Foreign Trade Minister Lubna to visit Sri Lanka for investment opportunities and to enhance friendship and business relations between the two countries. She accepted the invitation to visit Sri Lanka in November 2011 with a trade delegation. Here the ambassador presenting her the monthly e-news published by the Sri Lankan embassy. Remanded for murder, robberies

Sujeewa Ruberu, a suspect involved in a murder case and several robberies was arrested by the Piliyandala Police and remanded by the Panadura Magistrate R S A Dissanayake pending investigations.

Panadura Police Crime Branch is investigating.


Vithum needs your help

Vithum R Karannagoda, 3, of Thalpitiya, Wadduwa is suffering from a severe hearing disorder. He has been recommended an urgent cochlea implant surgery which is estimated to cost Rs 4 million. According to ENT surgeon of the Lanka Hospital, Colombo, Dr Devanand Jha, this surgery has to be performed before the child reaches the age of adolescence.

Vithum's father, Ishan Karannagoda says he is not in a position to foot this bill and request the public to assist his cause by sending whatever possible contribution to A/C 090020142611 at HNB, Tissamaharama branch.


Rs 260m to develop road

The government has allocated Rs 260 million for the development of roads in the Karandeniya electorate under the Sapiri Gamak Supri Ratak programme, said Resettlement Minister Gunaratne Weerakoon.

Minister Weerakoon was speaking at a ceremony to commence development work of the Mulkada Agaliya road in the Welvitiya Divithura Divisional Secretariat Division. The government has allocated Rs 80 million for the development of this road.Nine kilometres Thalgahawatta Atakohota road will be developed at a cost of Rs 150 million, the minister said.


Injured motorcyclist dies

A motorcyclist injured in a motorcycle-cab collision at Dummaladeniya on the Chilaw-Puttalam road succumbed to his injuries at the Marawila hospital on Saturday. The deceased was identified as J.M. Chandrasiri (60) of Lunuwila. The alleged cab driver was taken into Police custody.

Wennappuwa Police is investigating.


World Catholic Youth Day in Jaffna

The 13th World Catholic Youth Day observed worldwide by the Catholic church was celebrated on August 21 in Jaffna Peralayam. The youth representatives from Jaffna, Trincomalee, Mannar and Batticaloa districts participated in the Youth Day festivities.

The Bishop of Jaffna Rt Rev. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam conducted the Holy Mass.

The Catholic Youth Day is a mega function in Spain celebrated with the participation of the Pope. It is being celebrated in a grand scale in Madrid from August 18 to 21. One million catholic youths from different parts of the world congregate in Madrid and conduct a mega function every year, said Rev. Fr. M.V.E. Ravichandran Director Jaffna district Catholic Youth Forum.


Trishaw driver dies

A three wheeler driver succumbed to his injuries when his three wheeler rolled over at Gannoruwa, Katugasthota on Sunday. The deceased , Ravindranath Ratnakumara is a resident of Haloluwa.

The body is lying at Kandy morgue for the post mortem. Katugasthota Police are investigating.
