ILO green jobs project

The International Labour organisation (ILO) will consider all jobs
that are found in the municipal solid waste management sector as Green
Jobs under the Green Jobs Project.
This will include compliance to minimum labour and environmental
standards in principle. ILO Country Director Donglin Lee said at a
seminar on Value Chain Development programme on Compost and Plastic
sector in Western Province stakeholders at Taj Samudra Hotel Colombo on
Friday.
Green Jobs in Asia project aims to address the issue , in turning
less decent unsafe, environmentally unfriendly jobs into productive
green jobs and ensuing that both the decent work aspects that respect
the rights of the workers and address environmental issues are properly
focused upon in a mutually supportive manner with close collaboration of
the Sri Lankan government and relevant parties including the ILO.
This will mark a technical milestone in the ILO/AUSTRALIA PARTNERSHIP
GREEN JOBS IN ASIA PROJECT, SRI LANKA CHAPTER he said .
The Western Province of Sri Lanka alone generates around 60 percent
(4200 MT) of the 7,000 MTs of the total quantity of solid waste
generated per day in the country. There are various strategies and
initiatives underway to improve solid waste management and support local
authorities through improved regulatory frame work. The ILO will add
value to these initiatives by providing technical and value chain
analysis and follow up interventions to solid waste management sector. |
