The use of biomass as a source of a renewable energy is becoming a
popular option today, as a result of the energy crisis in the world due
to the excessive cost of supplying fuel to generate thermal energy for
industries.
The Biomass Dendro power generating project is located on a 2.5
hectare land close to the Mahaweli river, in the Divisional Secretariat
of the Uva Province.
This biomass plant will use Gliricidia branches as fuel wood which
will give the rural communities additional employment opportunities and
create sustainable avenues for eco friendly power generation.
It is the objective of the Government to fulfill a part of the
country's energy needs through the use of Gliricidia that will save
substantial foreign exchange.
The company will produce a net annual electricity generation (at 85
percent efficiency) around 37,230,000 kWh.
The estimated cost of this project is around Rs 1.5 billion and will
be partly financed by internally generated funds of Tokyo Cement Group
and the balance by bank borrowings.
The Tokyo Cement Group has been a shining example for good corporate
governance preserving bio diversity through the eco friendly Biomass
Dendro Power Plant. The Tokyo Cement Group is a pioneer in adopting this
technology in Sri Lanka and meets the entire energy needs of her cement
production in Trincomalee using renewable resources. |
