Rs. 1 billion cancer hospital for Kandy

A state-of-the-art Rs. 1 billion, five storeyed cancer hospital,
billed to be the best of its kind in the South Asian region that can
accommodate up to 300 patients, will come up in Kandy soon. The proposed
hospital comprising a five storeyed building, which will be built
adjacent to the present Kandy Hospital premises will have all the modern
amenities.
It will be a great relief to all cancer patients living in the
Central, Northern, Eastern, North Central, North Western, Sabaragamuwa
and Eastern Provinces. The hospital is expected to draw patients from
the rest of South Asia and the Gulf as well, Central Province Governor
Tikiri Kobbekaduwa told the Daily News yesterday.
The buildings and infrastructure will cost Rs. 700 million and the
remaining Rs. 300 million will be spent on the purchase of equipment.
Originally, there was a lot of opposition to the location due to
restrictions in the parking area, but the doctors and the medical staff
supported the move due to the facilities and the logistics available in
the Kandy National Hospital, he said.
The plans have been submitted by the Kandy Hospital authorities to
the Kandy Municipality and the construction work will commence early
next year
