The training of the ordinary teachers in sign language and Braille Alphabet will be done at the National Institute of Education in batches.

The teachers who receive training at the NIE will train the other teachers in their schools.

“Over 200 ordinary teachers had been trained and released to schools up to date,” Education Ministry Special Education Unit Director H P N Lakshman told the Daily News.

The Government is planning to appoint at least one person who is competent in sign language to all the Government officers and public places to help impaired persons.

Assistant Director Priyani Wijesinghe is coordinating the project.
