To strengthen communal harmony:
Multi religious centres set up -PM

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said the Government has set up multi
religious centres throughout the island to strengthen communal harmony
among the various religious groups.

He made these comments participating at the National Program to open
multi religious centres in the Moneragala district. The ceremony took
place at the Buththala Catholic Church recently.
The Prime Minister further said that the Government is fully
confident that development of the multi religious centres would help
build pluralism among society.
The Moneragala phase of the national program to improve spiritual
harmony and set up multi religious centres was held at the Kataragama
Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya auditorium from August 27 to 28 where
various items required were distributed to upgrade 360 religious centres
located within the district. Addressing the gathering the Prime Minister
said the rural economy is pivotal to develop the economy.
“We cannot develop the national economy by indulging in a negative
mentality. This fact is evident when we look into the histories of other
developed nations. This is the most opportune moment to bring the
country forward and enhance the living standards of the people, he said.
He pointed out that certain areas in the Moneragala district are
faced with a drinking water problem, wild elephant threat, poor eduction
and health facilities. He said President Rajapaksa has taken a firm
decision to give priority to develop the rural economy in the budget and
bring solutions to the issues affecting the Moneragala district.
Uva Province Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa said that the
Provincial Councils have a major role to play in providing solutions to
the socio economic problems of the Moneragala district. Provincial level
programs in line with the national level ones are under way to end
poverty and related issues in the district, he said.
The National Program was held with the participation of Maha Sangha
and other religious leaders. |
