Extortion a plenty at SLCTB

Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB) conductors are being
extorted by fellow staffers who are seeking gratification from them to
do their duty.
Conductors in Horana, Panadura, Kaduwela, and Moratuwa bus depots
have faced this situation though they do not dare to divulge them.
Mechanics, technicians and even timekeepers are demanding money from bus
conductors, a conductor who wished to remain anonymous said. According
to the conductor, they have to pay at least Rs. 10 to every officer
after the bus is taken out of the depot. He said the technicians and
mechanics demand from Rs 100 to Rs 500 for every repair.
According to officers of several SLCTB depots in the Kalutara and
Colombo districts, this situation cannot be curbed as this type of
incidents take place on the understanding between conductors and
mechanics. It has been reported that these officers delay the repairs if
they are not given the gratification.
The conductors have no other alternative than paying the money as
they will not be able to achieve the target income if the bus is
delayed. Bus drivers and conductors are paid a percentage wise incentive
when the revenue of their bus increases beyond the stipulated target.
Meanwhile, SLCTB Chairman H.D. Bandusena said he was not aware of
such a situation in SLCTB Depots. He said he has also received no
complaints.
Bandusena said things of this nature can easily be curbed, if it is
true. He said stern action will be taken against staffers who indulge in
such activities. |
