SPMC to issue thyroxin tables
Chaminda Perera
The State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) will issue
thyroxin tablets made by the Corporation in compliance with the
international standards to the Government hospitals and the local market
in the first week of next month. Thyroxin tablets are given to patients
with hypothyroidism.
The Corporation started manufacturing these tablets locally after
taking into account the severe shortage of thyroxin tablets in
Government hospitals for over a year.Sri Lanka requires two million
thyroxin tablets a month and the patients had to purchase substitutes
due to a shortage of tablets in the local market. According to a Health
Ministry spokesman, the production of thyroxin tablets locally will save
huge amounts of foreign exchange.
He said the production capacity of the SPMC has increased recently
and a large number of tablets and syrups required by the Government
hospitals are produced by the Corporation. |
