LSE impressed with Colombo Bourse

Trading at the Colombo (CSE) and the London Stock Exchanges (LSE) has been excellent. The London Stock Exchange is confident about future activities in Sri Lanka. London Stock Exchange Information and Technology Director David Lester told Daily News Business this year is equally important for Sri Lanka and the UK as the entire world is recovering from the global economic meltdown.

Industry hails gold import tax removal

The removal of all taxes on gold imports will increase the demand for Sri Lankan jewellery in the international market and encourage industrialists. Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association Vice Chairman A.P. Jeyarajah told the Daily News Business that export prices for Sri Lanka’s jewellery will be highly competitive in the international market in the future.

Senior citizens earnings on rupee savings in FDs:

Bonus interest payments to begin Thursday

The Central Bank said payment of bonus interest for senior citizens for January 2010 will commence from Thursday. This is in terms of the Government decision to pay a 20 percent bonus interest to citizens over 60 years on interest on their rupee savings and fixed deposits held with licensed banks from January 1, 2010. This is subject to a limit of Rs 120,000 per senior citizen per annum.

To thwart another crisis:

Even though the world’s second economic crisis has subsided, the tremors are still felt in certain economies. Therefore, wider financial stability is needed, Presidential Advisor Dr. Ranee Jayamaha said. “The laws enacted in a country are important in stabilizing the financial system otherwise the normal services are violated,” Former Central Bank Deputy Governor, Dr. Ranee Jayamaha said.
