Udarata Menike derailed

The engine and four compartments of the Colombo-bound Udarata Menike train was derailed between Peradeniya and Kadugannawa around 2.00 pm yesterday.

Chief Railways Controller Nihal Ferdinandus told the Daily News nobody was injured in the incident.

He said the movement of trains on the upcountry line came to a standstill until repairs were done to the track.

Meanwhile, the Colombo bound intercity express train commencing from Kandy at 3 pm and Kandy bound express train commencing from Colombo Fort at 3.30 pm had to be cancelled. In addition, the Badulla bound night mail train starting from Colombo at 8 pm and Colombo bound night mail train starting from Badulla at 6 pm have also been cancelled, he said.

The derailment which caused minor damages is being investigated by railway officials.

Train services will be back to normal once the track is cleared, he added.
