Nation Building Minister Salinda Dissanayake has given a new leaf to
paddy farmers in and around Ibbagamuwa by introducing a novel farming
method called Sri to his paddy land which can record a harvest of 400
bushels per acre by sowing only four kilos of seed paddy.

Minister Dissanayake describing his feat said his fertile paddyfield
is situated close to the Bathalagoda Farm, Ibbagamuwa.
"I have introduced this successful method of paddy cultivation to a
large number of farmers. This method of paddy cultivation needs only a
little water. It needs only 35 percent of the quantity of water normally
used by a farmer," he said. "I use only carbonic manure for my
cultivation. I never use artificial manure. I plant 164 plants in an
extent of one perch. One hundred sprouts can be obtained from one plant.
That means 100 pods of paddy can be obtained.
"Accordingly I can obtain 400 bushels of paddy from one acre by
sowing only four kilograms of seed paddy," Dissanayake said.
"This method of cultivation is called the Sri method. It originated
in the Philippines. I would request the Agriculture Ministry to
introduce this type of paddy farming to our farmer community," he said. |
