Sri Lankan athletes bag four Gold Medals
Swimmer Mineka clinches her second gold in 100 m
breast stroke:
Sri Lankan athletes had a field day bagging four Gold medals, one
Silver and one Bronze on day two of the Athletics Event at Bangabandu
National Stadium in Dhaka here on Sunday. Chandrika Subashini gave yet
another splendid performance to win her second Gold medal in her pet
event - 400 metres. She ran a superb race showing her class to return a
time of 54.28 seconds. Her first Gold was in the 200 metres on Saturday.
Sri Lanka added two more Golds with the Men’s and Women’s relay
quartets proving their class in the 4X100 metres.
The men’s relay quartet of Jeevan Fernando (first lap) Shehan
Ambepitiya (second), Ashan Hasaranga (third) and Shivantha Weerasooriya
(fourth) running smoothly were ahead from the start and collected the
Gold timing 40.02 seconds.
The third Gold was won by the Women’s relay quartet comprising N.C.
Priyadarshani, Achala Dias, Sujanika Buddhika and Premila Priyadarshani
in the 4X100 metres relay returning a time of 46.33 secs.
All runners did their best in maintaining the lead with superior
baton changes.
Ace high jumper Priyangika Maduwanthi was responsible for the fourth
Gold medal in the Women’s High Jump.
Priyangika went over the bar perfectly to clear a height of 1.81
metres to come out on top. Dulanjali Ranasinghe obtained the Bronze
medal going over the bar 1.72 metres.
Prasanna Amarasekera had to be satisfied with a Silver in the Men’s
400m event. He finished second - 42.36 secs.
Nishan Kumara secured a Bronze medal in the Men’s Triple Jump. His
distance in the event was 15.19 metres. Athletes have won 14 medals -
six Gold, five Silver and three Bronze upto Sunday evening.
Mineka clinches her second gold in 100 m breast stroke
Mineka Karunaratne set the pool alight winning the second gold in
swimming discipline held at the National Swimming Complex in Mirpur on
the 10th day of the 11th South Asian Games here today.
She continued her good form to bag the gold in the 100 metres breast
stroke clocking 1:18:60 seconds. Off to a good start from the blocks,
Mineka was in front in the first 50 metres in 35.15 secs and from there
onwards she swam with authority touching first with 0.16 seconds ahead
of her main rival Mahefeza of Bangladesh.
Mineka won her first gold in the 50 metres breast stroke on Friday.
Indeed a grand double gold for her. Heshan Unnamboowe the gold medallist
on day one bagged a silver in the 50 metre backstroke returning a time
of 27.93 secs.
In this event Meikote Badarainth won the gold with a new record
timing of 27.63 secs.
The second silver went to Gihara Amerasinghe in the 50 metres back
stroke 34.56 secs.
Conrad wins Silver
Conrad Francis won a Silver medal in the 100 metres Butterfly Stroke
clocking 58.44 secs in the Swimming discipline.
Hockey
India beat Sri Lanka 2/1 after leading 1-0 in the third place match
of the hockey tournament played at Moulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium.
Sri Lanka played a well controlled game but due to poor referring
deprived the bronze.
Wrestling 2nd bronze
Saman Dinesh Kumara won the second bronze in the wrestling
discipline. The bronze was in the 60 kg. Our karate men’s team won a
bronze in the karate discipline.
Lankan paddlers take two silver medals
Sri Lanka men’s and women’s paddlers fared well to collect two silver
medals in the table tennis team events of the 11th South Asian Games
played at Woodenfloor Gymnasium.
Hosts India grabbed gold in both the men’s and women’s events
defeating Sri Lanka in both semi-finals in straight sets 3-0.
In the men’s team finals they beat Sri Lanka 3-0. Soumyadeep Roy beat
Chalitha Ranjana 11-5, 11-6, 11-5, Amal Raj Anthony beat Rohan Sirisena
11-5, 11-9, 11-8, Kumar Rao beat Sajith Priyadharshana 11-4, 11-6, 8-11,
11-4.
Indian won the gold in the women’s beating Sri Lanka 3-0. Shamini
Kumaresan beat Darshani Nayananjana 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, Madhunika Pather
beat Ishara Maduransi Darshika 11-6, 11-8, 11-5, Mamata Prabhu beat
Nuwani Navodaya 11-9, 11-8, 11-2.
At the 2006 South Asian Games in Colombo Sri Lanka were the silver
medallists.
Wushu - a silver
Wasanthi Lakmali won the silver medal in the discipline of Wushu
(under 52 kg) - women after a fierce battle with Eti Islam of Bangladesh
at Sylhet, BKSP.
In the gold medal decider Eti outplayed Wasanthi Lakmali to hang the
gold medal around her neck.
Dhammika Abeyrathne also went on to secure silver medal in the Wushu
discipline. Dhammika won it in the men’s 65 kg category.
Sri Lanka also bagged a bronze medal in the 60 kg men through A. T.
Siranjan. In this event too bronze was decided on identical score point.
Squash
Sri Lanka men’s team won a bronze medal in the squash played at Datha
Golf Club.
Shooting
Sri Lanka finished third to win the women’s team bronze in the 50
metre three position of the shooting competition. K. G. Pradeepika
(556), H. R. P. Ramani (545), B. I. R. Buthpitiya (553), combined to
gather 1,654 points for the bronze medal.
Karate
Sri Lanka karatekas did the country proud when they grabbed a gold
medal in the men’s individual event team kata at the karate discipline
held at Soharawardy Indoor Stadium. R. J. Edward lived up to expectation
in the individual kata, demonstrating better acts than the Bangladesh
and Pakistani players to win the first gold in karate. In the men’s team
kata Sri Lanka secured a bronze.
Wrestling
Roshan Indika Liyanage won the first medal - a bronze in the
wrestling discipline held at Kabbadi stadium.
He won the bronze in the 66 kg weight class after equalling with the
Bangladesh grappler Chandra Ray.
Taekwondo
Sugath Weeradewage came up with a good performance to achieve success
winning the bronze medals in the taekwondo discipline held at National
Sports Council Gymnasium.
Sugath took the bronze in the 68 kg category after a tight contest
with Pakistani Rehmat Ian. |
