President in address to Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia:

Lanka will contribute to world peace

For over three decades the very existence of our nation and the peace and prosperity of our people were threatened by the LTTE menace described as one of the deadliest terrorist organizations. When they adamantly rejected our sincere efforts for negotiation we had to use military means to defeat them and launch a humanitarian operation with absolute care to rescue the civilian population held hostage by the terrorists for decades, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday.

Russia honours President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa was conferred the Doctorate Honoris Causa by the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia yesterday for his contribution to world peace in defeating terrorism and for his distinguished service to education and development.

Main thrust on rural sector

The main thrust of the development envisaged under the Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dekma of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the development of the rural sector to be on par with other sectors providing the infrastructure and economic development opportunities to accelerate the annual growth rate of the economy between seven to eight percent in the next year and after, senior ministerial sources told the Daily News yesterday.
