Janashakthi National Sailing C'ships:

Tharindu most promising sailor

It was indeed heartening to witness the 13-year-old, Tharindu Lakshan, receiving the Tryphon Mirando award for being the most promising sailor at this year's sailing nationals.

The Nationals began last Saturday and concluded on Sunday, to end in the evening with the awards ceremony at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club, Bolgoda.

It was organised and conducted by the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka and sponsored by Janashakthi for the eighth consecutive year with the CMYC being the host club.

There were as much as twenty five boats vying for championship honours in the different category of boats viz; GP14, the enterprise, the Lasers I and II and the optimist class, 15 in number for the juniors under the age of 15 years.

Since the championship enjoyed national status, it was organised and conducted on the lines of an international regatta, governed by the IYRU rules and in conformity with the local YASL sailing instructions, with accredited Judges and a race committee, headed by Lalin Jirasingha, who was responsible for setting the course.

Every sailor competing, took part in 3 races each day, accounting for 6 races within the 2 days. And the best positions obtained by each participant was taken to determine the winners.

Tharindu, a lad from the Ruhunu Sailing Association and a 13-year-old student from Sri Sangabo MV Weligama - accustomed as he was to the water stretches of Mirissa and Weligama showed much promise of becoming a competitive sailor in the future, on the not so familiar Bolgoda Lake. He was placed sixth in the overall positions of the optimist class.

The consistent husband and wife combination of Anil and Michelle Gunewardena won the GP 14 class. It was most significant to find that quite a number of Navy Officers taking part. They dominated the Enterprise Class, with W.P.K. Janaka, Pushpakumara and N.G.M.U. Gnanawardena being most impressive, while Kodituwakku and Bandara did well in laser standard.
