New SLLA President
Upali Amarasiri assumed duties as the President of Sri Lanka Library
Association (SLLA) recently. Amarasiri is the Director, National
Institute of Library and Information Science (NILIS), University of
Colombo.
Awards presentation
The Awards Presentation Ceremony of the State Music Festival - 2009
jointly organised by the Cultural Affairs Department and Sri Lanka Arts
Council together with the launching of Sonduru Nimnaya CD of the State
Music Troupe will be held on November 29 at 6.00 p.m. at the John de

Arafa sermon live broadcast
The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Muslim Service will live
broadcast the Arafa Sermon from Masjidul Nameera, Mecca, Saudi Arabia on
November 26 from 2.30 p.m.
Bodhi Pooja
The Sri Lanka - Thailand Society will hold a Bodhi Pooja and Pirith
Chanting on December 4, Friday at 5.30 p.m. at the Gangaramaya,
Hunupitiya, Colombo 2.
Correction and clarification
In our news report titled Anandasangaree Defamation Case; Express
Newspapers barred from appeal, which appeared in the Daily News on
November 19, the name of one of the appellant-defendants should be
corrected as V. Devaraja and that the compensation awarded by the
District Court was a sum of five million rupees.
Special Jury Award for Siri Raja Siri
Somaratna Dissanayaka’s Sinhala film ‘Siri Raja Siri’ has won a
special Jury award at the 16th International (Golden Elephant)
Children’s Film Festival held in Hyderabad India on November 20.
‘Siri Raja Siri’ represented Sri Lanka at this festival which also
featured films from India, China, Iran, Germany, Italy and Netherlands
in its final round.
This is the seventh international award bagged by ‘Siri Raja Siri’
directed by Somaratne Dissanayake who has 27 film awards to his credit
so far, said a spokesman for the National Film Corporation.
Examination on World Peace
The competitive examination which tests the knowledge of world peace
and ethics conducted by the Dhammakaya Foundation of Thailand covering
72 nations will be held on November 29 at 9.30 a.m. at 268 exam centres
in Sri Lanka.
Around 6140 daham pasal students selected from 307 Sasanarakshaka
Mandalayas in Sri Lanka will sit for this exam especially along with
their parents who will lend assistance in answering the question papers
through discussion.
Eid-Ul-Alha prayers
The Nawala Jumma Mosque will conduct Haj festival prayers for ladies
commencing at 8.15 a.m. by Alhaj Mowlavi M. T. Hilurudeen. Eid-Ul-Alha
Prayers for males will commence at 8.30 a.m. conducted by Alhaj Mowlavi
M. B. M. Mubarak.
Prayers, lectures
Prayers will commence on Sunday, November 29 with Rathibathul
Jalaliya by Moulavi A. B. M. Mubarak and Y. M. Rafi, It will be
conducted after Magrib prayers and will continue till Isha prayers.
A religious lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj M. T.
Hilurdheen after Isha prayers at the Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Vidyartha Nite
The annual get-together of Vidyartha College, Kandy organised by the
Old Boys Association of the Colombo Branch will be held on Saturday,
December 5 at the Grand Oriental Hotel (Taprobane), Colombo 1, from 7.30

PIBM awards ceremony
The Post Graduate Institute of Business Management (PIBM) will hold
its Degree Awarding Ceremony to award Master of Business Administration
(MBA) degrees to those who successfully completed the Masters Degree of
its affiliated Vinayaka Missions University at PIBM, on November 25 at 2
p.m. at the BMICH, Colombo. Education Minister Susil Premajayantha will
