Canadian tourist to sue Kataragama UDA

A Canadian female tourist hopes to claim compensation from the
Kataragama Urban Development Authorities for a leg injury caused by
falling into an unprotected manhole in Kataragama town.
The tourist who arrived in the island a few days ago had come to
Kataragama to visit sacred places including the Kataragama Maha Devalaya
and Kiriwehera in the sacred city.
After visiting these places she had come to Kataragama Town to
purchase some goods. While walking along the pavement, she had fallen
into a pit which covered upto her shoulders. When she raised cries
several three wheeler drivers had rescued her and taken her to a near by
private dispensary.
After receiving treatment she had refused to pay, saying the
authorities who constructed the town are liable to make payment for the
treatment as the physical harm was caused to her through their
negligence along with compensation for physical and mental agony.
She had got the address of the Urban Development Authority in Colombo
from the people who had gathered and told them that she would lodge a
complaint to claim for compensation.
