'This is It' tops charts worldwide

The concert rehearsal of Michael Jackson as captured on film entitled 'This is It' is raking in millions of dollars in revenue at the box office. The film generated more than $100 million in less than a week.

The movie is about Jackson's rehearsal for his ultimate live concert show in London a few weeks before his death last June. The film captures Jackson's pre-concert performance planned for London audiences that would have started in July.

Sony reportedly bought the rights to the Jackson thriller for $60 million and is planning to have an extended run for the blockbuster overseas and on a country-to-country basis.

As Philstar.com reports:

Worldwide, 'This Is It' already has shot past Cyrus' concert film. Cyrus mainly appeals to American teens, and her movie got only a limited release overseas, where it took in about $5 million to give the film a global total of just over $70 million.

'This Is It' played in 3,481 theaters domestically, about five times the number for Cyrus' movie. But 'Best of Both Worlds' ran in 3-D, for which theaters typically charge a few dollars more.

Michael Jackson died June 25, of cardiac arrest at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles California. Jackson's death triggered an outpouring of grief from millions of fans around the world.
