World Science Day school program

The National Science Foundation is organizing the World Science Day
2009 – Schools Program under the theme ‘Information and Communication
Technology for National Development’. The main program to celebrate the
World Science Day – Schools program is to be held tomorrow at the BMICH.
Around 1200 schoolchildren with their teachers are expected to be
participated at this event from all districts including the Nothern and
Eastern provinces, said Science and Technology Minister Tissa Vitharana
at a press conference held yesterday at the Information Department.
“The main objective of this program is to popularize science amongst
schoolchildren to cultivate an appreciation of the value of science,
scientific methods, technology and the integral role that science plays
in modern society,” said National Science Foundation, (Head of Science
popularization devision), Rohini Vijeratne.
“Satellite communication technology programs for schoolchildren in
various districts of the country to showcase their scientific knowledge,
innovation and advancement by participating in competitions such as
poster presentations, drama, digital stories which convey scientific
concepts and role plays which play the characters of eminent
scientists,” she said.
“Awards will be presented to the winners of the competitions such as
World Science Day 2009 – School competitions, National Olympiad
competitions, Science research project competitions, National winners of
the Sri Lanka science and engineering fair, star rating awards for
school science societies based on their performance in the year 2008,
NSF award for teachers for promoting science amongst schoolchildren and
National award for popularization of science.
Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana and Minister of
Education Susil Premajayantha will be the chief guests of the event and
eminent scientists, educationists will be among the invitees.
