Irrespective of position no unauthorized person will be allowed to
enter polling or counting centres, Election Commissioner Dayananda
Dissanayake said.
The Election Commissioner was addressing the media regarding the
Southern Provincial Council Election.
The Southern Provincial Council Election will be held tomorrow at
1,485 polling stations to elect 55 members including two bonus seats.
”Normally some people try to enter polling and counting centres
pointing to their positions.
But no one will be allowed to enter whetever his position be.
Armed people including bodyguards of politicians will also be not
allowed to enter such premisses. Without prior approval, no one can
photograph or video record any polling centre or counting centre.
Bringing mobile phones to polling stations is also prohibited,”
Dissanayake said.
He pointed out that all possible steps have been taken to ensure a
free and fair election.
In this regard the duty of the police is vital as the police have to
pay a major role in the election process. “Posters, banners and cut-outs
still exist in two areas of Hambantota district. If the police fail to
remove these, a decision will be taken whether the election will be held
in these two areas”, he said.
Votes will be counted in 153 counting centres established in Galle,
Matara and Hambantota districts. Apart from these 15 more centres will
be established for counting postal votes.
It has been estimated that 1,761,859 voters are qualified to vote at
the election while 5,650 Government officers have been assigned for
election duties at the three districts.
