UPFA records increase in vote base

The pattern of votes polled by the major political parties after the Presidential Election 2005 showed a progressive increase for the UPFA while the votes polled by the two other political parties the UNP and JVP decreased considerably from election to election.

During the Provincial Council Election of the Eastern Province separated from the merged Northern and Eastern Provinces, the UPFA won a clear majority of votes while the UNP was defeated. More importantly the results of the Provincial Council elections show that the UPFA had polled almost two third of the vote for the first time since the proportional representation voting system was introduced in 1978.

During the Uva Provincial Council election, the UPFA was able to increase the percentage of votes polled during the Presidential election by 31 percent and for the first time since the PR electoral system was introduced to poll nearly two thirds of the vote. Therefore the UPFA had clearly polled higher and higher percentage of votes in all elections held since 2005.

Based on a comparative statistical analysis made by Senior Lecturer University of Peradeniya and Consultant Media and Information Ministry Charitha Herath.
