The Russian Federation has taken an initiative to assist Sri Lanka in
the humanitarian sphere by donating 18.5 million Rubles for the IDPs in
the North. They have decided to send a special aircraft with
humanitarian aid including mobile power stations, tents, food and
medicine to backup and uplift their living conditions.
"My country supported Sri Lanka starting from its struggle for
independence, in building its national economy and of course in its
struggle against terrorism. We have always respected the sovereignty,
independence and the national dignity of Sri Lanka and will render all
possible assistance without any conditions,"said Russian Ambassador to
Sri Lanka Vladimir Mikhaylov at the handing over of donations, held at
the Russian Cultural Center yesterday.
The Ambassador said the assistance for Sri Lanka is done with an open
mind and it represents the will of the average people in Russia. He
appreciated the Government's process of resettling the displaced in the
North with the resources available.
Russia donated two mobile power stations, tents, blankets, food items
like canned meat and canned fish together with medicinal aid including
medicines and disinfectants. Disaster Management and Human Rights
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe appreciated the assistance which was
granted without a request by the Sri Lankan government and expressed his
gratitude to the ambassador for facilitating the IDPs.
"This event will strengthen the friendship and sincerity between the
two countries and I assure that the aid will reach its destination on
time and the IDPs will be benefited", the Minister added. |
