The Mahabodhi Society of India recently commemorated the 145th birth
anniversary of national leader Anagarika Dharmapala at the
Mulagandhakuti Vihara, Saranath, Varanasi where the Buddha preached his
first sermon.
The function was held under the direction of Maha Bodhi Society
General Secretary Ven Dr. D. Revatha Thera and Mulagandakuti Vihara
Chief Incumbent Ven. Dr. K. Siriumedha Thera.
The chief guest at the function was Urban Development Minister Rohana
Dissanayake. Former Indian Rajya Sabha (Parliament) member Gandhi Azad
was the guest speaker. Varanasi Sanskrit University Vice Chancellor
Prof. Kutumb Shastri delivered the presidential speech.
Earlier the Dharmapala Memorial Football tournament was organized by
the Maha Bodhi Society with 22 school football teams participating. The
commemoration event was attended by hundreds of members of the clergy,
devotees and pilgrims, Buddhist Theosophical Society Colombo President
Sanath P.Weerasekara and Mihin Lanka Airline Chief Executive Officer
with a group of Sri Lankan pilgrims also attended the function. |
