Bo tree falls, two dead

Two women, D.M. Karunawathie (52) of Nugelanda and U.M. Indrani(65) of Dalugollegama died and 23 others injured when a Bo- tree branch fell into Obbegoda Purana Viharaya, Monaragala at 7.30 pm Saturday.


SPC polls: 9,000 on election duty

Arrangements have been finalised to deploy 9,000 officials on election duties in the Matara district for the Southern Provincial Council Election which will be held on October 10, Matara's Assistant Elections Commissioner C. A. Suneth Lochana said.


Vas Pinkama

Lyceum International School has organized Vas Pinkama.

This Vas Pinkama will be held under the supervision of the Incumbent of the Sri Dharmaramaya, Nugegoda Ven. Bogambara Rathanajothi Thera. The Sri Dharmaramaya, Nugegoda at the end of the retreat will hold an over-night "Pirith" ceremony on Saturday, October 10, "Daval Dana" (alms) will be offered to 100 monks on Sunday October 11 followed by "Kathina Perahera", starting from the Lyceum International School at Nugegdoa at 3.30 p.m.


Computers for rural schools in Horana

All rural schools in the Horana Circuit are being provided with computer units on the instructions of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka and the recommendation of Western Provincial Council Member Vidura Wickramanayaka.

Thirteen schools will benefit from this program. The Tambapanna Vidyalaya and Millewa and Kumbuke Primary schools have already been provided with computer units under this program.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will open the computer unit at the Kekulaliya Primary school today.


National Productivity Awards

The National Productivity Awards ceremony will be held at the BMICH at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

National Productivity Secretariat Director Upali Marasinghe said 48 schools, 98 State institutions and 20 private sector institutions would receive awards tomorrow.

Labour Relations and Human Resources Minister Athauda Seneviratne, Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and Labour Minister Mervin Silva would participate at the function.

Teacher felicitation

The Past Pupils of Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa (1966 O/L batch), has organised a felicitation ceremony to honour their teachers on Sunday, October 11 at 10.30 a.m. at Sripalee Reception Hall, Moratuwa.

There will be a “sing along” and other entertainment activities on this day. Seventeen teachers will participate.


Early childhood diploma course

Applications have been called for enrolment of trainees to the 27th batch of the Early Childhood Pre-school Teacher Trainee Diploma Course, Government Information Department said. All applications should be forwarded to Director, Children’s Secretariat, Child Development and Women’s Empowerment Ministry, No. 177, Nawala Road, Narahenpita to reach him on or before October 15. Persons in the 18-35 age group who have passed the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination are eligible to apply. Those employed in early childhood centres and pre-schools will be given preference.


Inter-school announcing contest

An all island inter-school announcing contest has been organised by the Colombo Ananda College Broadcasting unit to mark its 36th anniversary. The English medium contest will be held at the school premises on November 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sinhala medium contest on November 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Public lecture

The American Center will present a public lecture on Post Conflict Tourism on October 7 at 6 p.m. at the American Center Auditorium.

The speaker will be Elizabeth Becker.


Lecture

Professor Martin Krygier, Gordon Samuels Professor of Law and Social Theory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney will speak on ‘Misconceiving the Rule of Law: Why those who have it find it hard to understand and those who need it find it hard to get’ on October 8 at 5.00 p.m. at the Law and Society Trust (LST), 3, Kynsey, Terrace, Colombo.

Dr. Deepika Udagama of the Law Faculty at the University of Colombo will chair the lecture.
