"If we strive to bequeath the hard won freedom and peace to the
future generation we can bring prosperity and happiness to the people in
the North.
"We will organise a training camp for the winners at this sports meet
to improve their sporting talents and introduce them to the national and
international arena," said Northern Governor Maj.Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri
when he addressed the gathering at the conclusion of the three day
Northern Provincial Sports Meet at the Duraiappa Stadium, Jaffna
recently.
Maj.Gen. Chandrasiri said Northern children could not display their
sports talents for nearly 3 decades due to terrorism. Now that terrorism
had been wiped they had regained that lost opportunity.
Maj.Gen. Chandrasiri said a massive accelerated development program
titled 'Uthuru Wasanthaya' had been launched in the North today under
the initiative of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and supervision of Basil
Rajapaksa MP. This would not only encompass economic development but
also development in fields of Education, Culture Aesthetics and moral
values. The Provincial Sports meet held during the last three days was
one aspect of that multi-faceted development program.
Social Service and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda said
children had a prime duty and responsibility to pressure the hard won
freedom and peace. He said children from Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu,
Kilinochchi and welfare villages have taken part in this years
Provincial sports meet and it was a happy occasion for all.
Jaffna GA. K. Ganesh was also present.
